There is no doubt that nanoscience is a breathtakingly interesting area, and one of the most exciting in modern physical science. It is also clear that the path from science to technology is just beginning to emerge, and it is too early to say whether the impact of nanotechnology on society will be revolutionary or insignificant. But, as a rule, where there is new science, there is new technology, and the U.S. can not afford to be other than a very active participant in this area.
